The National Assessment for 8th grade students represents the external summative evaluation method of the competencies acquired during lower secondary education.
The exam takes place annually in a single session. Both candidates from public education and those from private education have the right to take the National Assessment free of charge.
The average obtained at the National Assessment VIII is a decisive criterion for admission to high school education.
The national coordination of the planning, organization, and conduct of the National Assessment VIII, as well as the valorization of its results, is ensured by the Ministry of Education through the National Center for Assessment and Examination (CNEE).

The development of specific assessment procedures is carried out by CNEE, following consultation with the ministry's specialized departments.

The county/Bucharest municipality coordination of the organization of the National Assessment VIII, as well as the valorization of its results, is ensured by the school inspectorate.
