The Civil Status Service issues upon request multilingual extracts from civil status documents regarding birth, marriage, or death. These are documents that have the same evidential value as civil status certificates and are used by holders and entitled persons before foreign authorities in countries that are parties to Convention no.16 of the International Commission on Civil Status signed in Vienna on September 8, 1976, to which Romania acceded in 2012 (Law no.65/2012).

Multilingual extracts of civil status documents issued under the terms of Convention no.16 by the competent authorities of the contracting states are recognized without translation, legalization or any other equivalent formality and are used under the same conditions as civil status certificates within the territorial scope of the Convention.

The signatory states of Convention no.16 are as follows: Republic of Austria, Kingdom of Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of Croatia, Swiss Confederation, French Republic, Federal Republic of Germany, Hellenic Republic, Italian Republic, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Republic of Lithuania, Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Republic of Moldova, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Republic of Poland, Portuguese Republic, Kingdom of Spain, Republic of Slovenia, Republic of Serbia, Republic of Turkey.

Multilingual extracts of civil status documents regarding birth and/or marriage are issued to the holders or their legal representatives, and multilingual extracts of civil status documents regarding death are issued to family members or other entitled persons.

Multilingual extracts may also be issued to other persons authorized by special power of attorney or vocational authorization. Upon request, applicants may be issued several multilingual extracts completed based on the same civil status document.Applications are submitted at the Civil Status Service located at

Fee of 13 lei (regular service)/36 lei (urgent service) – is paid at the cashier of the Civil Status Service headquarters.
