The Civil Status Service issues, upon request, multilingual extracts from civil status acts regarding birth, marriage, or death.

• These are documents that have the same evidentiary power as civil status certificates and are used by holders and entitled persons before foreign authorities in the states party to Convention no.16 of the International Commission on Civil Status signed in Vienna on September 8, 1976, to which Romania adhered in 2012 (Law no. 65/2012).

• The multilingual extracts of civil status acts issued under the conditions of Convention no.16 by the competent authorities of the states parties are recognized without translation, legalization, or any other equivalent formality and are used under the same conditions as civil status certificates in the territorial domain of the Convention.

• The signatory states of Convention no.16 are the following: Republic of Austria, Kingdom of Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republic of Croatia, Swiss Confederation, French Republic, Federal Republic of Germany, Hellenic Republic, Italian Republic, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Republic of Lithuania, Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Republic of Moldova, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Republic of Poland, Portuguese Republic, Kingdom of Spain, Republic of Slovenia, Republic of Serbia, Republic of Turkey.

• The multilingual extracts of civil status acts regarding birth and/or marriage are issued to the holders or their legal representatives, and the multilingual extracts of civil status acts regarding death are issued to family members or other entitled persons.

• Multilingual extracts may also be issued to other persons authorized by special power of attorney or attorney authorization. Upon request, several multilingual extracts completed based on the same civil status act are issued to applicants.
