State Institute for Variety Testing and Registration*

The granting of legal protection for a newly created variety is done after establishing its novelty and performing the DUS test in the experimental centers of ISTIS, under field conditions. Legal protection is valid on the territory of Romania.

At the request of a Testing and Variety Registration Authority from another country, the REPORT ON THE TECHNICAL EXAMINATION OF DISTINCTNESS, UNIFORMITY AND STABILITY is issued for varieties tested at ISTIS. This report serves for the registration of the variety in the national catalog of the respective country. International Regulations of the UPOV Organization, of which Romania has been a member since 2001.

For the registration of a variety in the Official Catalogue of Cultivated Plant Varieties in Romania for commercialization, the applicant must request the inclusion of the variety for testing. Testing is carried out in the experimental fields at ISTIS network testing centers. The tests performed are DUS and VAU. The DUS test lasts 2 years (2 vegetation cycles) and is mandatory for all species. The VAU test lasts 2-3 years and is mandatory for the field crop species. Registered varieties are notified to the joint EU catalogues and can be cultivated and commercialized in all EU member states.
