The Family-type Alternatives Department – The Body of Professional Maternal Assistants ensures the protection of the child who requires the establishment of a protection measure that involves the upbringing, care, and education of the child by a professional maternal assistant, at their home.

The professional maternal assistant is a natural person, certified, employed by the General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection, who ensures at their home or, as the case may be, at their residence, the upbringing, care, and education of the child during the period of application of the special protection measure of placement, emergency placement for the child temporarily or permanently separated from their parents, or, as the case may be, during the respite period of another maternal assistant.

Persons domiciled in the territorial area of Sector 5, interested in becoming maternal assistants, submit to the General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection Sector 5 an application for the evaluation of their capacity, accompanied by the documents mentioned below.

The certificate is issued by the Child Protection Commission Sector 5, for an indefinite period and is reviewed every two years.

Medical certificates for the applicant and for each person with whom he/she lives, issued by the family doctor, stating that they do not suffer from communicable diseases.*
